Andalusia’s whitewashed hill villages are a highlight of any Málaga trip. The two most popular near the city are Mijas Pueblo and Frigiliana — both beautiful, but with a different feel and very different locations.
| Mijas Pueblo | Frigiliana | |
|---|---|---|
| Location | West, above Fuengirola | East, above Nerja |
| Travel time | ~45 min | ~1h |
| Views | Sweeping coastal panorama | Mountains & valley |
| Vibe | Lively, touristy, fun | Quieter, more authentic |
| Combine with | Beach at Fuengirola | Nerja & the caves |
| Signature | Donkey taxis, rock chapel | Flower-filled Moorish lanes |
Mijas Pueblo
Mijas sits high above the Costa del Sol with jaw-dropping sea views. It’s the more developed and touristy of the two — think souvenir shops, a tiny chapel carved into the rock and the (controversial) donkey taxis — but undeniably pretty and very easy to reach.
Frigiliana
Regularly voted Spain’s prettiest village, Frigiliana is a cascade of whitewashed houses, blue pots and flower-draped lanes in the hills behind Nerja. It feels more authentic and less commercial, and the Moorish old quarter is a joy to get lost in.
Which to visit
If you’re based west (Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola) or want coastal views, go to Mijas. If you’re heading east or want the most beautiful, photogenic village, choose Frigiliana and combine it with Nerja.
Our verdict
For sheer beauty and atmosphere, Frigiliana edges it. For convenience and big coastal views — especially with kids — Mijas is the easier win.
