Alcazaba of Málaga

A spectacular 11th-century Moorish palatial fortress above the old town.

The best-preserved Moorish fortress in Spain, the Alcazaba climbs the hillside in a layered maze of horseshoe arches, courtyards and trickling fountains. Built by the Hammudid dynasty in the 11th century, it connects to the Gibralfaro castle above and offers sweeping views over the port. Go early to beat the cruise crowds.
